Moving from Firefox to LibreWolf
Today I learned that Mozilla, on a moral downhill for at least a good decade (e.g. this or that) finally went past my personal line by bending the knee in front of our EU Stasi overlords and including the infamous QWACs in their 153 release, the latest ESR.
Even before that, I had pages of modifications to my prefs.js to fight
the various abuses. But you know what? This suddenly reminded me of the few months I spent on
Windows 10 at work (before getting a Macbook with its own share of annoyances) trying to constantly
fight it to avoid ads and system bloat slowing it down; especially the part where you end up fearing updates instead of welcoming them.
So despite the roughness of LibreWolf (the WIP switch from RFP to FPP is supposed to improve things), I'm a wizard who did daily drive Icecat eons ago, let's go!
A small question and helpful confirmation later and I'm tinkering on my bwrap sandbox to support Firefox forks in general. The result is a small-ish change that does the trick. Then I export/import my bookmarks and uBlock config, reinstall LocalCDN and everything Just Works™.
In my opinion, the current version occupies a comfy spot in the privacy/convenience compromise graph, in between the letterboxed Tor browser and a riced Firefox with CanvasBlocker . The UI provides a nice way to enable saving site data only for some domains and tweak RFP exceptions.
It'd be nice if this show of slightly less laziness from me could convince some of you to try it =)
