Music review: Dystopia - Human = Garbage (1994)

Album cover

Continuing with something a bit personal despite myself. You see, admitting to having this work in your favourites is a bona fide confession that your life is far from a happy one. In fact, it'd be a good soundtrack for someone trapped in Falling Down like it's the Groundhog Day.

Here, a still young Dystopia looked at the dirtiest sludge - stuff like In the Name of Suffering - and reacted this way:

Thus they took some of Swans' sonic bleakness, added a pinch of borderline powerviolence aggression to that early sludge and ended up with this ode to the infamous Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable saying: a lump of negativity and despair that pushed the high water mark of extremity.

Some people might have a hard time taking it seriously (especially the samples), but I think the vocals' sincerity really help on that front. The happy-go-lucky probably won't get it, though.

I'll stop here because other than copy-pasting the thesaurus for negative adjectives (again), there's not much I can do to describe it further. Basically, it's one of those Life sucks, then you die albums, but without the quiet acceptance. Oh, and special mention to the extremely loud and abrasive bass guitar, really gives it personality.

The 5 tracks EP is an obvious 10/10, but the 12 tracks compilation is a 9 in my opinion.
