My archives
After receiving this post in my daily feed fetch and reading it, I decided it'd be a fun exercise.
In no particular order, with the disclaimer that I'm absolutely against music/video streaming except for discovery:
- 2~3 GB of audio reproduction related data (research, papers, measurement data). I'm a Hi-Fi enthusiast with Genelec loudspeakers, if I need an explanation.
- 13 GB of graphic art (artbooks, paintings, engravings). A big fan of Gustave Doré (I have his complete illustration of the Divine Comedy), Hans Dahl and John William Waterhouse.
- 1~2 GB of PDFs, HTML and EPUBs distributed between papers (mainly computing), documents, novels, web pages, technical and philosophical literature.
- 15 GB of comic books, including some favourites like Judge Dredd, XIII, Punisher MAX or Lex Luthor: Man of Steel.
- 17 GB of Doom mods/TCs (you should really play Ashes 2063 & Afterglow!), 2 GB of Quake 3 maps, some build engine games, a few Linux native VNs and 30 GB of Magic: The Gathering card scans (for use with these scripts).
- 850 GB of manga, downloaded from various places. This is in addition to the two ceiling high bookshelves I also keep. Continues to grow thanks to
cron
and my incremental MangaDex mirrorer. - A lovingly curated music collection of 460 GB, all FLAC. Ripped or downloaded, well-tagged (incl. EBU R 128 ReplayGain and label/catalog n° when I have it) and with high quality cover art. Maintaining it allows me to avoid the whims of streaming platforms and record labels (horrible remasters without choice, removals for ideological reasons, obscure stuff never reissued).
- 4.7 TB of particularly liked anime, carefully selected by fansub and filtering/encoding quality. I myself did some Vapoursynth and x264/x265 to restore some mangled DVDs at times.
- 240 GB of cartoons, I need my regular dose of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Xavier: Renegade Angel. Even have some Wakfu/Dofus stashed in a corner, to hear my own language from time to time.
- 150 GB of videos from YouTube, various stuff like music clips, lives, independent animation, Quake matches, etc... including some truly Internet defining moments like the late Grumpy Jii-san, Gachimuchi pearls, the KXVO pumpkin dance or DBZ's sacred ointment.
- 4 TB of movies, mostly remuxed Blu-Rays and 1970~2000. Only for stuff I truly liked.
- 500 GB of TV stuff, almost exclusively Top Gear/The Grand Tour.
Personally, I don't bother (yet) with RAID, only XFS, LVM (for JBOD), dm-crypt and some regular offline, cold backups. Might look at bcachefs in a few years.
